But I get up again
You're never going to keep me down" - Tubthumping, Chumbawumba
So the small one had her first really good head bump, knot on the noggin and all. And like the good Momma I am, I only panicked for about ten minutes. I actually feel good about that.
I picked Maeve up after she fell, just another ouchie, but then I felt her head and oh my God - a lump! A huge lump! Okay, not that huge, but her head is still pretty little. I picked her up and darted for my Dr. Spock book for advice.
Which was totally useless, as was my Kaiser handbook and my other baby's first year book. In retrospect, this is probably because I was looking in the index under Head and Bump, not what I should have been looking at, which was Concussion.
In panic mode still, although Maeve just seemed sad that I wouldn't put her down so she could go play, I checked with a mom friend who was online on Facebook. She assured me that this happens to everyone, and that if Maeve seemed normal and wasn't throwing up or passing out she was probably fine.
Here's what I would have found if I'd Googled baby concussion yesterday:
My baby fell and hit his head. How can I tell if he has a concussion?
Your baby may have one or more of these early symptoms:- loss of consciousness
- drowsiness
- dizziness
- confusion
- vomiting
- irritability
- drainage, clear or bloody, from his nose, mouth, or ears
Anyway, she's back to her old self, and her noggin has recovered beautifully. Hopefully next time it happens I won't panic quite as much. But I'm still proud of myself for taking my friend's word for it, and not phoning up my pediatrician or trying to put a cold compress on Maeve's head, which would have undoubtedly made her super mad.
Cookies and Carebear jammies are a great cure for head bumps. |
This is why I often think seriously of constructing a bubble wrap suit for Sammy, just so I don't have to go through moments like that. Good job on keeping the panic at bay--I hope I can do as well as you when the times comes!
