Maeve awoke from a late nap yesterday afternoon. I had run out to the store, and Daddy was home from work. She was in some sort of molar pain, as evidenced later, but Dad was very distressed that when he got Maeve out of her crib, she would not let him touch her, and kept backing away from him in apparent terror. Poor Daddy!
I think she was just disoriented and in pain, but she definitely hurt his feelings; she made up for it after dinner with lots of giggles and chases with Dad. But that trick of backing away is one that Dad and I are not big fans of. It makes us feel pretty awful. Nothing makes your heart sink like watching your one year old back away from you like you've turned into the closet monster.
On the other hand, she needs to know how to back up, to get herself out of sticky situations, to remove herself from toxic friendships, and to slowly back away from the creepy guy, whoever and wherever he may be. Putting things in reverse can be a lifesaver, and can get you starting out in a new direction, or back on track.
So we'll try not to take the backing up personally, since it's really just the deployment of a new skill in action. And we'll try to make sure there's nothing big behind her so she doesn't totally wipe out trying to do it!
