Just doing my bit to amaze and astonish you: Maeve is trying to learn how to snap and how to whistle.
I know she's a little young for both those pursuits, and I certainly wasn't engaged in convincing her she needed to learn. But Maeve is nothing if not interested in everything grownups do, and snapping and whistling are pretty intriguing. Plus a kid can make extra noise that way, and Maeve is all about noise.
She started making whistling noises because she's working on making the "O" sound. She makes a very silly face, a big exaggerated O, and breathes in and out of it. And wouldn't you know, it makes a kind of whistle noise. It's faint right now, but I wouldn't be surprised if she got a stronger sound very soon. Let's not jump the gun, it's not like there's a tune involved. But the real challenge of whistling is getting your mouth in the right position and getting the air flowing the right way, and folks, she's there.
The snapping happened on our trip to England. She very intently watched Grandma and I snap our fingers, then asked us what we were doing - This? We replied Snap. She immediately said Snap, and started trying to accomplish the same noise with her fingers. She hasn't gotten that elusive snap noise yet, but I actually think she's doing it right, she just doesn't have the right muscles in her fingers yet.
So my funny little bean runs around the house these days with a big O on her face, furiously working her fingers. She'll get the hang of it one of these days, but for the moment, she sure is funny to watch!
