Shriek Time

"A baby is a loud noise at one end and no sense of responsibility at the other. "-Ronald Knox

On a deliciously fun visit with some friends, I discovered that what I predicted last January has now arrived: Maeve chases her buddy T around, as they joyously shriek together like groupies at a concert.

You can't blame toddlers for discovering the volume knob on their own voices, it's part of growing up, but I wish I had access to that knob these days, so I could turn her down.  She always knew she could cry really loud and from the gut.  Her crying volume, right from the start, would have made any Broadway star proud.  But now she knows she can say things loud, and make shrieking noises at great volume, and to great effect in provoking a response from Mommy and Daddy.

We are attempting to ignore the screaming when it's part of a temper tantrum or protest, actively looking away from her and saying things like "it sure is hard to pay attention to Maeve when there's so much noise!" but there isn't much to do about the happy screams.  I'll just keep her away from art museums and sleeping infants for awhile.

Maeve and T whoop it up

  1. Oh man, the happy screaming! You don't want to discourage it because it's coming from a good place, but it's also pretty embarrassing at times, like when Sammy decides to test out the acoustics at Montpelier while the tour guide was doing his spiel. There's got to be a happy medium, right?
