Color Wonderful

"The soul becomes dyed with the color of its thoughts." -Marcus Aurelius

Our thoughts in the house these days are brick red, yellow-green, aqua, brown, fuchsia, and cerulean.  Yup, Maeve discovered coloring yesterday, and I rediscovered the pure, effortless joy of the smell of wax and coloring books, of filling in shapes and coloring the sky.

She only recently got enough control to hold a crayon right, and can finally push hard enough to make a mark, and now it's coloring all over. She's distinctly bummed that crayons don't make a mark on the carpet or her skin... we are a long way off markers.  And she has not yet discovered that they will mark on our white walls or in non-coloring books, although I don't imagine it'll take too long to sort that out.

One of her chief joys, besides taking exploratory nibbles of the crayons, is just picking them up and dropping them.  They make such a nice noise together, and they slide out of her hand so nicely.  And emptying out the Hello Kitty lunchbox that I got her to keep the crayons in, that's pure pleasure.

When she gets bigger, I want to color mandalas with her, because I find it very soothing.  I used to color mandalas when I was pregnant with her, and was feeling overwhelmed with worry. It's just as relaxing as regular coloring, but there's a little more freedom in the more abstract forms, and it gives you space to think just about color, and calm your thoughts.

Being the mom of a toddler is so much fun, despite all the challenges, and coloring is definitely a big benefit!

I think it's kind of an impressionist tree.  Thoughts?

  1. If only Sammy had as much interest in putting the crayon to paper as he did putting it in his mouth!
