One Two

"And the Lord spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it." - Armaments 9:22 (Monty Python)

Maeve is yet again accomplishing the previously unthought-of: she is learning to count.  Or to be more accurate, she's learning to recognize what numbers looks like, and repeat their names; I am pretty sure we're a long way off from actually connecting those characters to an actual concept of how many.

On Saturday, she was sitting on the couch saying "One, one, one" and I thought to myself, is she trying to count?  So I said "Two?"  and she took off with "Fwee, foww, fiyy" and with our help, got all the way to ten.

It’s not surprising, considering her undying love for the Count of Sesame Street fame.  She watches about a half an hour of Count clips from Youtube every day, so it idea of counting was bound to rub off on her sooner or later.  But like almost every development she’s had, I so did not see it coming.  It’s like encountering wildlife on a drive in the mountains.  There’s no obvious warning sign, and then 50 deer! On the road!  Just around the bend!

Anyway, she amazes me.  But you knew that.

  1. She's a genius! Pretty sure. And I love watching the count on Sesame, he's my fave. Kids are amazing and they are like little sponges, you think they aren't paying attention and the next thing you know they are speaking fluent Spanish. Who knew? :-)

  2. You had me with the Holy Grail quote! That's so awesome that she's putting all of this information together--she'll be doing long division before you know it! :D
