Weather Changes

"A change in the weather is sufficient to recreate the world and ourselves. " -Marcel Proust

Today, Maeve is nineteen months old, and tomorrow it is going to snow.  Unrelated, I suppose, but the change in the weather makes me think of how quickly she changes and grows.

Just like the Colorado weather: on Monday, it was 60 degrees, tomorrow we have a high of 23 degrees, it won't even get above freezing!  Just so, my daughter ignored strangers two weeks ago, and now clings to me like Saran Wrap when someone talks to her.  Last night, she said "All done" to me, instead of "Ah-Nee" which she has said for months and months.

And just like the weather, there's nothing to be done about it.  As the year grows older, and changes inexorably, so does my daughter.  Some new seasons of her life are a phase, some are becoming a part of her personality.  I can only get out my gloves and overcoat, and prepare as best I can.

Also like the weather, her changes make me pensive.  They wake me up to her growth, and remind me that her world is always changing and expanding.  I opened the curtains for her this morning so she could see the sunrise, and she took notice of it, a detail that would have been beyond her grasp just weeks ago.  So I must do my best to continually open up her world to other new experiences, things she has previously ignored or disliked may become her new favorites.

I am stunned to find myself so flexible, and her so changeable.
