Walking Papers

"Perhaps the truth depends on a walk around the lake. " -Wallace Stevens

Caught up in the excitement and hilarity of Maeve's new game, I forgot her big milestone yesterday.  Maeve has now been a proud, mobile, independent, walking person for a whole year.  She took her first steps on February eighth last year.

I was breathless with anticipation tinged with foreboding, and right I was to be foreboded.  Ever since then our lives have been a practically-nonstop ride toward whatever she was interested in next.  This, this, this, became the rallying cry, and it's even stranger now to realize just how many nouns she knows from our constant naming.

Like any child her age, Maeve is determined to find things out, to reach the undiscovered country of the things just out of reach.  Walking was her second foray into mobility, after crawling for one single month.  As it turned out, crawling just would not do; it was not fast enough nor tall enough for her purposes.

And now she grabs my hand and runs to wherever her little heart pleases.  And a year later, I am still out of breath keeping up with her curiosity and will.

Off and running

Still going
