Her Voice

"I celebrate myself, and sing myself. " -Walt Whitman

As I am a singing sort of Momma, I have been not a little bit curious about when my little girl would start to sing.  She had been experimenting with talking at different pitches, which I hoped was a good sign, but I worried that since I sing to her all the time, maybe she didn't feel the need to do it herself.

She also tends to speak along with her favorite songs, rather than try to sing along; she knows the words, she just hasn't figured out the tune.  It sounds like a little, low-pitched baby rap accompaniment to Raffi and Elmo.

But this week, just after I asked my mommy friends from our old due date forum when their toddlers started singing, Maeve began singing, in a way.  She is such a narrator that she sings the word singin', and that's all she sings.  Oh, yesterday I did hear her trying to sing some ABCs, but mostly it's just the word singin'.

Sometimes she throws a little shriek into the mix, and Daddy told her that it didn't really count as singin', that it was screamin'.  So now she "sings" with a mixture of the words singin' and screamin', punctuated by little shrieks.  It's just plain adorable.  The best part of all is hearing her voice, even though she is singing artificially high in a baby-falsetto.  It's still beautiful and I love it!

I promise I will add video to this post if I manage to catch her singin'!

  1. I have yet to catch Susannah on video doing her "singing" too. She is such a performer until the camera comes out!! Good luck getting a Maeve video- she sounds super cute!
