"I think we consider too much the good luck of the early bird and not enough the bad luck of the early worm.

Maybe a couple of worms in the yard will be spared, Maeve and I made pine cone bird feeders yesterday. Or, as she calls them, bird snacks.
We started with a plate of wild bird seed, two pine cones, and some ribbon tied around their tops. I think the smaller the seeds, the better, since you want them to stick to peanut butter.
I coated each pine cone in peanut butter, then asked Maeve to roll them in the seeds. Truthfully, she mostly tried to steal peanut butter off the pine cones and eat it (as pictured above), but with a little help from me, she got the job done.
We hung the pine cones from aspen trees in our front yard, from branches that had other branches near them. I was trying to picture the birds having a place to stand while they pecked seeds off the cones. Sorry for the blurry picture, but you get the idea.
Hard to believe we were playing in the wading pool 2 days ago! Maeve had fun feeding the birds, and I was happy when she reminded me later in the day that we had made the bird snacks. It must have been memorable!
What a great project to do together! Makes me want to bust out the peanut butter and find some pine cones!
ReplyDeletePeanut butter bird seed pinecones - a classic! Is that snow I see?
ReplyDeleteIt sure is, Tonya! We had snow falling all day yesterday, but not much of it stuck... which is fine with me!
