It's Really Early

"I think we consider too much the good luck of the early bird and not enough the bad luck of the early worm."  -Franklin D. Roosevelt

Why is it that the sun is getting up later and later, and my little sunshine is getting up earlier and earlier?  I don't know, but I'll give you $20 if you can tell me why, and more importantly, what I can do to stop it.

We have moved bedtime back, we have crept around as silently as possible, we have darkened her room as much as we can. So what can we do?  I am pondering getting her a little lamp she can turn on, and teaching her to play quietly in her room until Mommy says she can get up.  Maybe at 6, a much more decent hour.

Let me clarify that I am only complaining a little bit; I am grateful she still sleeps like a log all the way through the night.  I would far prefer early mornings to interrupted nights, by a long shot.  And she's napping beautifully again, so all the really important sleep is happening, and I'm up at 5 anyway.

But and however, the reason I'm up at 5 is that I need a good half-hour to an hour before the child wakes up in order to be my nicest Mommy self.  And the shorter that time gets, the harder it is to put up with the constant demands, whining, crying, and destruction that my day entails.

At least she was willing to watch Wall-E this morning for awhile so Mommy could blog.

Her shirt says Good Morning Mommy!  Maybe I should have gotten her one that said I'm Still Sleeping!

  1. I remember being desperate to keep them sleeping so I could have some "morning" time, and god help them if they didn't nap. Sleep was the only escape i had in a world so squished with needs, unresolved and ongoing marital frustrations, and utter and complete loss of autonomy. I get it. Boy, do I get it. I think a lamp would be perfect, and teaching her to read a digital clock is a great skill. "When the clock says 6:00, you can come out!" She may learn to enjoy her own solitude in the process.

  2. I wish I had some advice to give you--we used to be able to set a clock by Sammy's sleep schedule but once he turned two, all bets were off. He's all but dropped his afternoon nap (ARGH!) and on the few occasions when he does nap, you have to add that time to his bed time, which means some nights he's going to bed at 9 pm. Mama needs more of a break than that!
