Coffee

"Coffee, the finest organic suspension ever devised."  ~Captain Janeway, Star Trek: Voyager

Nothing gets done in this house until the coffee is made.  I know that doesn't make me unique, especially among new parents, but it is nonetheless true.  What's strange to me is how I did without it for so long.

Back in high school, caffeine was my sole fuel.  I had Physics first hour my senior year, and my grade in that class would have been even worse without Mountain Dew.  My mom refused to buy it for me; she said she didn't want to be my "enabler".  But I had to have the stuff, it was not optional.  Many's the Saturday afternoon I spent at the Lighthouse Cafe in Louisville (before Starbucks came to town and all the local places died) drinking coffee with my best high school friend, flirting with the guys who worked there and staying past closing time.

In college, my tastes became more refined, so I sometimes drank chai or coffee instead of just soda.  One glorious year I lived right across the street from Margie's,  probably the best coffee shop in Greeley.  Caffeine was still what got me going in the morning, and was totally necessary for survival.

But after college, I started sleeping more, and coffee began to sit badly with my stomach, so I gave it up.  I didn't have coffee again until maybe 2008, after I had my gall bladder removed, but even then, it was by no means a necessity.

Until now. Now it's not just my fuel, it's my spark. No coffee, no Momma. Thank goodness it's cheap, and I can flood it with flavored non-dairy creamer until it tastes good.  I agree with Captain Janeway (on many subjects) but especially this.

The reason for the coffee... but so cute!

  1. Coffee - mommy's little helper! I make mine the night before so all I need to do is flip the switch. I'm dying for one of those keurig thingamagigs. And there is nothing like stopping at Starbucks when out on errands. It's the small things in life...
