Rolling

"Rollin', rollin', rollin'
Though the streams are swollen
Keep them dogies rollin'" - Rawhide theme

Maeve has a new occupation: no longer is she just an eating, diaper-making, sleeping machine.  My Maeve is a roller!

She knew how to roll over before, but now she can do it tummy to back, back to tummy, any old which way she wants.  Now she wants to spend all kinds of quality time on the floor, rolling this way and that, footloose and fancy-free.  When I woke up this morning, she was trying to roll out of the co-sleeper, so I put her back in the crib, which kept her busy for another 15 minutes.  But wow, she wakes up wanting to roll, all she did last night when she stayed home with Daddy was roll, she's a rolling machine!

With every milestone, I get so excited, but part of me is sad, too.  I know it's a typical Mommy reaction, but it used to be if a toy was out of her reach, she needed my help to get it; now she's got the power, and I can just watch her amuse herself.  Some of you toddler mommies out there are thinking: enjoy this while it lasts! As soon as she walks, you'll never have a moment's peace again!  Point taken, but right now it's bittersweet to see her become just an inch more independent.

She does still get her arm stuck under her sometimes, and she has a ways to go before she's totally proficient, so I'll keep encouraging her to keep trying, while secretly relishing that she's not totally there yet.  It won't be long, though, so I guess this is as good a time as any to practice just a little letting go.

  1. It's hard as they change. Each milestone is so bittersweet. Today was G's first day in his new class and I kept thinking wistfully how one year from now, he'll be in Kindergarten.

Thanks for adding me to your blogroll, by the way. I've added you to mine as well :)
