Thrive

"A garden requires patient labor and attention. Plants do not grow merely to satisfy ambitions or to fulfill good intentions. They thrive because someone expended effort on them."  - Liberty Hyde Bailey

I am inclined to believe the same is true of babies., they thrive because someone expended effort on them.  This past week, both my husband and I suffered from a 24 hour flu that was distinctly awful.  Its onset was sudden, its reign despotic, and its draining effect was near total.  We each survived, but were significantly weakened afterward.

Maeve, however, has done beautifully the whole time.  She's like zucchini, she just keeps getting bigger and healthier all the time.  I'm so grateful she didn't get sick, maybe the breast milk I've given her has, in fact, boosted her little immune system.  But whatever the reason, she smiled, napped, ate, blew raspberries, and rolled over for us the whole time we were languishing.  What a peach!

I'm so thankful, too, that we were sick on different days, and that my mother in  law was available to come help me yesterday, or life would have been a real misery.   I was so weak yesterday morning that it was hard for me to lift my little 15 pound wonder, so having her here saved both of us.  I got a nap, and Maeve got a Grandma date.

Maeve is strong, able to bounce back from all sorts of interruptions to her nap schedule and reasons to be uncomfortable.  I'm so amazed by how she grows and blossoms every day, it's like living in a garden in Paradise.

  1. I'm glad you're doing better! I can't imagine taking care of a baby while that sick.

  2. My little one hasn't been sick yet either (knock on wood), I guess breast milk is good, even though I don't BF anymore. Glad you feel better!

  3. Glad you made it through! A couple of years ago, my oldest son had an emergency appendectomy, and while I was in the hospital with him, my husband was dealing with the stomach flu with the other three at home. Then I got the bug while I was staying in the hospital with Cameron! We all survived and have a story to tell...not fun at the time though!
