Mom

"Thou art thy mother's glass, and she in thee
Calls back the lovely April of her prime."
~William Shakespeare

I have known I was becoming my mother since I was in high school.  Not that I look that much like her; I am her.

In high school, this bothered me, so I tried to differentiate myself from her: I refused to read murder mysteries and wear brown turtlenecks like she did, and got my ears pierced because even though  it grossed her out.

I got over it, though, because as a woman, you just know in your bones that the process of aging naturally turns a person into her mother.  There really isn't anything to be done.  So you relax a little, start wearing comfy jeans and clipping coupons.  And have a baby.

I am at an age now where I look back on the majority of my mom's parenting decisions and just hope I can raise Maeve as wisely and well as I was raised.  Now I would consider it a badge of honor to be told "You're just like your mother."

So as my parents spend a glorious 3 weeks here for Christmas, I'll have a blast hanging out with my mom, and I'll learn as much as I can.  We moms gotta stick together!

  2. I am definitely my mother's daughter--I learned there was no use in denying it a long, long time ago. :D Have a great holiday with your mom! (And that picture of both of you is just awesome)

  4. Oh yes, we do become our moms, don't we? I'm glad you are able to find wisdom from yours. A gift. I'm learning to find the wisdom in mine, although much of the time I worry about becoming too much like her, and not in a good way. Have a wonderful visit with your family!
