In case you have somehow missed it from my other posts and/or my general writing style and values, I'm an English major. An English major who focused nearly all her studies on the literature end, not so much on the writing end. So books are my life. Used to be my life. Till I had Maeve.
I still read sometimes when she's napping, but ho boy, I usually have too much to do while my hands are free to spend time reading. And sadly, Facebook's lure is strong.
But I do get to read to Maeve, and that's one of the best parts of my day. Her Daddy taught her how to turn pages, at least in a board book. We're not trying her out on paper books yet because ripping paper is one of her major hobbies. These days she grabs one of her books and hauls it over to me about five times a day, plopping herself on my lap, eager to do some page turning. Total bliss for me!
Her favorite at the moment, and mine, too, is I Love You, Little One by Nancy Tafuri. It's sweet, gently affirming, and full of great colored pencil illustrations. I highly recommend it for anyone under two or any parent. Her shiny, new favorite came to us at Christmas, and it's called Tails by Matthew Van Fleet. It's goofy, has a great internal rhyme scheme, and lots of textures to touch and toddler-resistant tabs to pull. I love the fun animal illustrations, and it has animals I'd never heard of, like the pangolin.
Being read to was my most favorite thing as a kid, even after I learned to read. Keep turning pages, my Maeve.

ReplyDeleteDitto on the new photo! I know you will, but keep on reading to Maeve - reading to your child is a great gift. And fill your house with books and magazines of all kinds. When you do get the chance, do read for your own pleasure as well - put down the "how-to" baby books and read something you enjoy!
