"Oh beautiful for pilgrim feet whose stern, impassioned stress
A thoroughfare for Freedom beat across the wilderness" - America the Beautiful, Katherine Lee Bates

Maeve is gaining independence.  She's like a new country, planting her flag everywhere, claiming new activities for herself, and generally scaring the hell out of me.  I wonder if England used to feel this way about America.

She's really improving at walking, to my chagrin.  She steadies herself, checks out where she's going, then starts stepping away.  This is good on the one hand because she doesn't try to walk when there are too many toys on the floor, but is terrifying because she gets a kind of "I can go anywhere!" gleam in her eye that makes my heart skip a beat.  Also, I've been praising her attempts at walking, so now when she starts taking steps she gets a big goofy grin on her face, because she knows she's impressing me.

Maeve also likes to play by herself more these days.   I can sit on the ground next to her and play for a little while, but she eventually loses interest in me and wanders off to do her own thing.  I try not to take offense, after all, there are other things I can be doing.  But most of them aren't as fun, say, as playing What's On My Head? or Oh No! The Sheep Puppet is Eating your Pacifier!.

Just nine months old, and already she's doing such a great job at growing and learning.  Motherhood is becoming more fun all the time.

Just playin'

  2. What a great analogy - America and England! And walking so early. Yikes! Amazing the progression in that first year. Enjoy!
