Climb Every

"Climb every mountain,
Search high and low,
Follow every highway,
Every path you know.

Climb every mountain,
Ford every stream,
Follow every rainbow,
'Till you find your dream". - Oscar Hammerstein

Oh, you know you wanted that stuck in your head all day, quit whining. Consider your suffering to be but a small part of my own current distress over the fact that my daughter can now climb furniture.

The kleenex box on top of the couch is not safe, I cannot let her go into her room or leave her unattended in the living room, since she makes a beeline for the first piece of unstable furniture and begins her ascent.  I almost wish I had a climbing wall and a harness to get it out of her system.

The main reason I can't leave her alone with the climbing is that she doesn't know how to safely descend furniture, despite my teaching her how to slide off the couch on her behind for months now.  Nope, when she's standing on the couch, she wants to walk off it in one giant step.  I get a headache just thinking about it.

I thank the baby gods that she has not yet thought of pulling out her drawers and using them as ladder rungs, nor has she tried to climb the bookcases... but maybe it's time to get some of those wall anchors for the shelves lest that moment arrive and find us unprepared.

So as you're humming Climb Every Mountain today, think of me in my suffering and terror, as Maeve discovers for herself just how fast a falling body accelerates before she hits the floor.  Oh, and sorry the video is sideways.
