Dressing Up

Oh, the complexities of being the mother of a girl.  I gave Maeve one of my old purses this week, and she just adores it.  She puts it up on her shoulder or carries it in the crook of her arm, and steps daintily around the house in order to garner compliments.  

And she reacts more when Daddy says how pretty she is than when I say it.  Good heavens, does it start this early?  At the ripe old age of 13 1/2 months, she wants to be pretty, grown-up, and be noticed by her daddy?  I am in shock.

Maeve is not an overly girly girl; she will not stand bows in her hair or pretty shoes that hurt her feet.  Mommy doesn't wear much makeup and I can't wear jewelry because she gnaws on it.  But she knows that Mommy carries a purse, and she wants to jump right in and join the club.  She is a little surprise sometimes!

And of course she is such a Daddy's girl, which came as no surprise to me, her daddy is darned awesome.  But it was unexpected, at least to me, how much she wanted Daddy to say how pretty she is.  When I say it, she barely notices, but she steps a little higher and swings that purse around when she walks by her Daddy.  He is already the audience for her fashion shows, so it's a good thing he's paying attention!

I am so grateful she will never have to fight for his attention, act out, or do outlandish things.  Her daddy will never ignore her or act like she doesn't matter just because she's a girl, and there are a lot of daddies out there who do just that.  I smile with a warm heart when she parades by her daddy, fishing for compliments, because I know he will always give them away.
