Tall Girl

"I'm too tall to be a girl. I'm between a chick and a broad. " -Julia Roberts

I am a tall girl - 5'11" to be exact.  I put on a vertical freshman 15 in college and grew 3 inches my freshman year, which a doctor friend of mine says is not possible.   Maeve's daddy is tall, too, 6'3" I think.  And if you double the height of a two-year-old, that's supposed to be the height s/he will be as an adult.

Maeve had her fifteen month appointment yesterday, and between the crying and the shots, we found out she is 34 inches tall, which is in the 99.9% for height for girls her age.  My daughter is two inches shy of being three feet tall, and even if her growth slows down considerably (which I doubt), she will easily be three feet by her second birthday next April.  So all signs point to Maeve being a gorgeous, leggy, six-foot-tall stunner when she grows up.

Being tall never bothered me, possibly because by the time I shot past my classmates in middle school, I had much bigger social problems to worry about.  I raised my hand for every question, was articulate, opinionated, and loud; I wore mismatched shoes and 5-years-out-of-date clothes; I didn't know who Greenday was... like I said, being tall was the least of my problems.

Maeve's dad had some terrible growing pains, he grew several inches one summer and really felt it.  I hope her growth comes easier, and slower.  We will do our best to prepare her for being a tall girl, but for now I just defend her at the playground when other moms think she's a not-so-bright 2 year old, and thank god for hand-me-downs and thrift stores.

  1. Hooray for giant children! I can totally see her being the leggy blond scientist bombshell type from the movies.

  2. Yay for tall girls! (I'm 5'10 1/2" myself and the running joke is that if Sammy manages to break 6 feet, it will all be because of my excellent genes, ha!)
