Alpha Baby

Above is a treasure from Sesame Street, one of my favorite alphabet songs ever.

Today I am a bragging momma.  Maeve can identify 14 letters of the alphabet - without clues or hints, and out of the context of her familiar books.  She knows A, B, C, D, E, G, H, K, M, O, Q, S, T, and X.  Little genius.  She points out letters she knows on signs when we're out and about, and even saw an X in crossed ropes at the playground.

We have definitely worked hard on the alphabet for almost a year now, and it shows!  She doesn't know any numbers yet, but we're working on that with the Jane Austen book she picked out at the library, and of course our friend the Count.  But she learned her alphabet letters from They Might Be Giants' Here Come the ABC's, Sesame Street, and a lot of alphabet books.

This is such an amazing time, Maeve learns a new word or two every day, and I think she understands more every minute!  Yesterday she starting saying "high" and "sky" during her favorite Twinkle Twinkle Little Star video, and although I don't think she knows their meaning yet, it's cool that she's sort of trying to sing along.

I admit that I was an early reader and an English major, so these literate strides are really counting for big gold stars in my book.  I would be just as proud if it were numbers she was so good at, but it makes me particularly happy that she loves her letters so much.

Reading her Pooh alphabet book... does a robot shirt make you smarter?
