Hanging On

"The best thing to hold onto in life is each other. " -Audrey Hepburn

Maeve is going through what I guess is a typical toddler phase, but I'm allowed to love it all the same, aren't I?  She's getting a little clingy.  When she's in strange situations, she wants to be picked up and held.  She finds safety in holding my hand.  And when she gets really excited, she throws her arms around my neck and holds on for dear life.

Like I said, I know it's developmental, but it's such a tangible expression of how much she loves and trusts me, I can't help but love it.  Even when she gets really worked up and grabs my hair by the handful to get a better grip on me, I just gently pry her hands free and smile.

I guess part of why I love it is that she's such an independent girl most of the time, running on ahead, climbing things, getting into scrapes, that it's nice to know she still needs me for more than just diaper changes and meals.

So hold on as long as you want, kiddo.  I like being your safe place, for as long as it lasts.

  1. Just wait until the first time she gets a broken heart ... she'll be right back to clinging to you and needing you to help her feel brave.
