Relying on Each Other

In the end, though, maybe we must all give up trying to pay back the people in this world who sustain our lives. In the end, maybe it's wiser to surrender before the miraculous scope of human generosity and to just keep saying thank you, forever and sincerely, for as long as we have voices.” - Elizabeth Gilbert

I believe in the beauty of a world where all of us freely help one another.  I believe that living in an isolated way takes away from the rich tapestry of life in which all of us are interconnected.  And also, I am immensely grateful for moments that bring people together in help, support, and kindness.

I've had many such moments in my life; times when I literally could not have succeeded by myself, but friends came to my aid, even strangers.  All those times, although difficult in the moment, are so valuable to me, because they remind me that my life is not a solo act.

Friends have brought me ibuprofen when my pain meds wore off after I had my wisdom teeth out, others brought me cookies and comfort after I didn't make my college choir tryout.  Friends have helped me pay the rent, have brought me meals after the birth of my daughter, and have just come to be with me when I was lonely or grieving.  And yesterday, when Maeve was sick and miserable, a friend brought us tummy-friendly snacks and pull-ups, which we desperately needed, but I didn't want to bring Maeve to the store in case she puked again.

So I try to participate in the circle, and bring food to my friends after they have babies or surgery, to be with them, in turn, when they are lonely or grieving, and give whatever I can.  I am so grateful to be a part of a wide web of people who are so kind.

And Maeve felt well enough to help make popcorn last night :)
