Coffee, Spices and Flour

“Coffee is a way of stealing time that should by rights belong to your older self.” ― Terry Pratchett, Thud!

Coffee.  Maeve knows Momma needs it first thing in the morning or nothing gets done.  She knows she can't have it because it has caffeine.  But yesterday she make up a whole game around it.

We were playing doctor, as we had been for about an hour.  But when Dr. Maeve heard my elbow was sore (a made-up ailment, of course) she decided the best thing to treat me was coffee, and she ran out of the room to go "make" some.

She took her sweet time putting it together, so I asked, What are you putting in the coffee?  Some spices, and a little bit of flour, she replied.  Yeah, most of the cooking I do with the kid is baking bread and cookies.

When she gave it to me to try, I told her it was wonderful, it made my elbow feel much better, and it tasted spicy and floury.  She insisted we rush upstairs and bring some to Daddy.

She then proceeded to act like I had given her an actual cup of coffee, absolutely bouncing off the walls.  She kept declaring she needed a puppy nap (we had been playing puppies earlier, also), then bouncing up for another "coffee break".  Daddy and I were pretty amused just watching the child alternating between pretending to drink coffee and sleeping for two seconds at a time.

I don't know what she thinks the stuff does for us, but she isn't getting any real coffee for a long, long time!

  1. My daughter has been drinking hot tea since she was three (she drank an entire pot on her 4th birthday) and we do let her mooch a little coffee on occasion. She never orders her own (prefers Chai or hot chocolate) but she actually does like coffee and is certainly a future drinker. She's 9 though, and I'll say I'd rather she drink coffee in high school than the diet soda I had tapped into an IV in my arm. :)

    1. I gave Maeve tea once this year and she spit it on the floor. Not a good omen! She won't even drink hot chocolate, she just wants the marshmallows off the top. A true hedonist!
