Fall is the Favorite

“Listen! The wind is rising, and the air is wild with leaves,
We have had our summer evenings, now for October eves!” ― Humbert Wolfe

I could be wrong, but judging by my daughter's reaction when the seasons turn, I think it's possible that fall is her favorite season.

And if I'm right, then she certainly comes by it naturally, as Fall is my favorite season, too.  It may be odd to feel rejuvenated by the slowly-sleeping trees and cold weather, but somehow I do.  And I think Maeve is getting excited about all the good things coming her way, from free candy from the neighbors on Halloween to giant meals with a poultry theme coming up in a month or so.

We had a big windstorm over the weekend which knocked down lots of the still-bright leaves from our backyard forest, so our leaf piles are particularly beautiful right now.  Our Japanese maple is putting out its brightest, most beautiful red leaves, while the ash drops a wealth of bright yellow leaves.

I also love having a young kid at this time of year, because not only do we get to play in leaf piles, but I get leaf-gifts every time we go outside.  And I remember so clearly bringing my own mother the fall leaves I knew she loved, the very best of what I could find, for her basket on the table.  So she comes by that tradition naturally, too.  Come to think of it, my mother's favorite season may be fall, too.  I wonder how far back it goes?

  1. I think this fall has so far been just about the most beautiful season ever. This is the first year I didn't go back to school of some sort, so maybe I'm just seeing it for the first time, but I can't get over how wonderful the days are!
