Go Ahead and Ask

We go through this exchange about eight times a day:
Me: Can I help you put on your shoes?
Maeve: NO.
Me: Fine. (walking away)
Maeve: BUT I NEED HELP PUTTING ON MY SHOES.
Me: Will you let me help you?
Maeve: NO
Me: Okay, then, go for it, kiddo.
Maeve: BUT I NEED YOU TO DO IT RIGHT NOW, MOMMY.
Me: (silently putting on her shoes)

I know it's hard for her, not to want help, but needing it at the same time.  She just isn't old enough to have the grace to just ask for help when it's needed, and nicely.  Nope.  Just yelling and arguing, right up until the necessary help is given.

This is one area where being an adult comes in handy.  On a good day, that is, I can just stand there and wait to see if she needs me without getting angry, and most of the time in my own life, I'm pretty good at asking for help when I need it.  Not always, my pride does get in the way every now and then, more often when I can't do something which I normally CAN do but am temporarily out of commission.

Anyway, today is a good day to be a grownup and admit you need help when you need it.  So go ahead and ask.
