"Sucking your thumb without a blanket is like eating a cone without ice cream!" - Linus, Peanuts
Maeve has found a companion for life's difficult days: her blankie. I chose it from among the many darling baby blankets she received; it's a light green, very soft blanket with an embroidered Piglet and Pooh on it, and it's just big enough to cover her but not so big she can't carry it around.
Everyone needs something for security; I had my own blanket as a child, and also a very beloved teddy bear (aptly named Bear) who were my constant companions. I had no trouble going to school without them, but they came with us on family road trips, or when we traveled at night.
Yesterday she was in so much teething pain, I had already done everything I could for her, so I went and got her blankie from her crib, and the look of relief on Maeve's face was practically palpable. Ah, thank goodness for simple solutions.
The feeling of clutching a soft, familiar object is deeply reassuring, and I'm glad Maeve will have that feeling, too. There are enough scary things in the world, some of us need something soft to hold onto.
I never had a blanket, but I did have a bear (named Teddy) who wore jeans. I kept rocks in his pockets and loved him tremendously.
ReplyDeleteYou're right, we all need something physical to hold on to sometimes.
