Old MacMomma

"And on that farm she had a teething toddler... e i e i ow!" - Me

Yesterday was not a good day.  Here's how I could tell.  I was singing Old MacDonald to Maeve, just for kicks, because she likes animals and animal noises so much lately.  I ended the song with a nice slow ritard on the Ooooo, and grabbed Maeve's nose for emphasis.  The second I let go, she commenced screaming and shaking so badly I thought I had hurt her nose somehow.

Nope.  She was just mad that I had stopped singing.  We spent the next hour watching Old MacDonald videos on Youtube until I could find one that wasn't total crap.  Also, you'd be surprised how many Old MacDonald Youtube videos are strictly not for children.  Or are in Armenian.

It was a long day yesterday, with lots of ice, popsicles, Tylenol, clove oil gel, cookies, and patience.  But the one thing that saved my bacon was Old Macdonald, which will apparently cause the child to smile, relax, and keep calm no matter what kind of pain and suffering she endures.

Maeve prefers Old MacDonald to go in this order: Cow, Crow, Duck, Sheep, Horse.  Let us not get the order wrong or omit an animal.  She even corrects me if I forget the right order when I'm repeating back the animal noises; such a thorough child.  It was her lullaby last night, I sang it to her this morning when I changed her diaper.  The thing is, with toddlers, if something works wonders like that, you stick with it.  How else do you think Barney stayed on TV for so long despite widespread detestation?

So we're watching Shaun the Sheep this morning in order to stave off the singing for a few hours, and so far, so good.  Maeve loves all those Baa Baas.

Mom, my teeth HURT!

  1. Poor baby and poor mama--I hope the teething lets up soon! Shaun the Sheep is always good for a distraction--I love him!
